One Project A Month - December - Purple Rag Quilt

Well it's finally finished, the purple rag quilt which started off as a normal quilt in April 2009.

In September I bought some more fabric which spurred me on to actually finish it.

So three months, 100 squares and lot's of hand quilting hearts and flowers later...
here it is, sorry for all the photo's but I'm really proud of how it's turned out and I hope the person I've made it for will love it just as much as I've loved making it. As well as buying new fabric, I've also recycled two pairs of curtains and a single duvet cover.

Can you see the binding, it's all the leftover fabric stitched together. I was just going to leave the edges raggy but I think the binding looks better.

I think the back of the quilt looks better than the raggy front.

so that's my sewing all finished for christmas, anyone spotted the mistake in the quilt yet?

Rag Quilt - more progress...

Well I've been slowing quilting away all week, some hand quilting and yesterday did some machine quilting, so I've done some flower shapes to complement the flower fabric.
I've now just got 19 squares left to quilt out of 128, I've done more work on this quilt in the last two weeks since buying the new fabric than in the last two years!

Those who follow me on twitter are probably fed up of hearing about this quilt, I think it's my best one so far as it's the first time I've done hand quilting and it's looking great so far.
Anyway here are some more photo's till next time...hopefully it will be finished then.

Rag Quilt - progress so far.....

Well I've been making progress this week on the purple rag quilt. The fabric arrived and I started cutting out, the purple velvet is going to be 10" size squares and all the others will be 5" squares. The fabric bottom right in this first photo is going to be the backing fabric. Here are some photo's so far....
I've also included some heart squares as well which I've appliqued onto white fabric and hand quilted around the edge. There will be 20 of those in the quilt.
The first heart on the right, I machined around the edge but I think it looks better hand quilted so I'm going to unpick it and re-stitch it.
It's the first time I've done hand quilting and I think it looks okay for a first attempt. Come back soon for another quilt update.

I've started so I'll finish.......eventually!

I first started this lilac/purple patchwork quilt in April 2009, I blogged about it here and here but just haven't been motivated to finish it,
I've made a start by sewing loads of hearts which looked a bit boring so I've bought some more fabric to add to it, this lovely colourful heart print fabric...
and this lovely flowers and butterfly fabric....

and this lovely crushed velvet...
and some lovely Benartex fabric, Cat's Amore design...
which will make it more colourful, so I can't wait to finish it now, it will be a rag quilt/throw and matching nine patch rag cushion, which should take me about three weeks, so I'm hoping to finish for the end of the month as a belated present for my niece's birthday ( erm, which was yesterday!)

So this will be my One Project a Month for September once it is finished!

One Project A Month - June

Well it's time for One Project A Month again. I've made the rag tote bag and I've washed it and it looks a bit raggy... I don't think it's one of the best things I've made, not as good as other bags I found on google last month....I think I'll stick to my shoulder bags instead. and I've had to take photo's with my mobile, not sure if you can tell but there is a pocket in the front section.... Remember the denim shoulder bag I made for myself last year, I've used up the rest of the fabric to make this bag and bought some lovely cotton fabric with a cloud design, which I bought as backing for a coin quilt which I cut out months ago, I bought some seaside fabrics to make that, so hopefully that will be 'finished' later this year. The back is the same as the front and the bag and straps are lined with a lovely pale blue soft cotton fabric and it's a good size, 19" inches x 12" inches and the straps are 30" long, perfect for summer days out.

I've also made some more Morsbags which takes my total to 103!

Christmas - Mum's Present - Garden Rag Quilt

Well just a week to go to christmas and I've finished it - my Mum's christmas present, a rag quilt. Can you remember in March 2008 when we went to Norfolk for my Mum's 65th birthday and I bought the Garden quilt kit..... well for the last six weeks on and off I've been busy trying to get it finished and tonight after busy sewing and clipping frayed edges for three and half hours, it's finally finished! and this is the back of the quilt...

I've used up some of the wool fabric left over from making my rag quilt but I had to buy the wool check fabric to finish it. I hope she will like it, I'm still not sure because of the raggy edges and the bits that come off but well we will see.....I think it looks better than my rag quilt because it is larger!

Anyway that's my sewing for 2009 all done with, so now a few more pressies to wrap (a few! - hubby wanted the pathe news videos so I've got from 1931 to 1995 to wrap up!) and some more food to buy next week (we've already got the turkey!) and the house to clean and I'm ready for christmas!

One Project A Month - November - Rag Cushion & Apron

Sewing:

I can't believe it's November already, it doesn't seem five minutes since I started doing One Project A Month and wondering what I was going to make each month..... If you've been following my blog then you'll know that last month I made the rag quilt and this month I've finished the reversible matching cushion which has lovely floral fabrics on one side and the leaf applique on the other side. and I've made a padded lavender heart with the leftover leaf print fabric. Xmas Pressie!

The apron pattern and fabric arrived last week. I've been sewing all week and I've finished my mum's apron as well! It was lovely fabric to sew and the apron is double thickness. As you can from this close up, I went a bit wrong on the pocket, the left side is higher up, oops!

Cats:

Here is a lovely photo of Millie trying to sneak in our bedroom door! She has been living with us three months now and has settled in really well, it's like she's always lived with us.

and here is Kitt and Millie on the settee together, this lasted about five minutes!

.....................................................

I've already finished 'One Project A Month for December' but it's for the christmas stocking swap so you'll have to wait till next month to see that!

Sewing - Raggy Quilt part 2

About two weeks ago I started this rag quilt...the checked fabric is an old jacket I've recycled, it's just been hung in the wardrobe for the last ten years, it was a lovely jacket but it didn't look lovely on me, I've only worn it once when we ( me, hubby, son, mum and dad went to York Minster to celebrate the start of the year 2000, so it has special memories for me),
the plain brown fabric was a skirt I started making but never finished and the leaf fabric and plain green fabric I bought on ebay. This is what the leaf fabric looks like cut out into the leaf shapes, I think it looks great....and this is as far as I've got. This is the first large quilt I've made and what I'm finding difficult because it's a rag quilt is that the seams are on the 'right' side of the fabric and the neat edges are the 'wrong' side. But the 'wrong' side looks just as nice as the right side. I thought I would have eight weeks to finish the quilt but last week someone from decent homes came round and checked the combi-boiler and central heating (which works okay and we are happy with) and he has told us we are having a radiator in the downstairs toilet and the combi-boiler will be taken out and a normal boiler put in, so that will mean a hot water tank in one of the bedrooms, we think it will be son's/ Kitt's bedroom, so that means now that we've had to find someone to look after the cats for four weeks (we've spoken to the woman who did a home-check for Millie from Cats Protection and she says she will have them - £8 a day for both cats) and we were going to put all the boxed up stuff from the kitchen and bathroom in there! The man from decent homes says that when he comes round the work usually starts within a month, so we think it will be November. Great timing, as hubby has got two weeks holiday from work, so instead of chilling out and going out, we are going to be stuck in with noise and dust and half the house in boxes for four working weeks and living off microwave meals!

Update 23rd October - I phoned up Decent Homes a few days later and asked when they are doing our area and they said November - February but they are doing our street at the end of January!
